This was one of the best CME classes I have ever done, and I have sat through a lot. There was so much relevant information, all evidence-based, and explained in such an easy, down-to-earth way. I learned so much from this class! I also appreciated the encouragement to be proactive and help to have conversations to change/incorporate guidelines. I wish I could give this class 10 stars!

I really didn't believe in the phenomenon of CPRIC until I encountered my first ever case, and I have since become an advocate for EMS having the right preparation and tools to deal with it when it occurs. In my case, it was a relatively young man (I think he was in his late 40s or early 50s) whose wife had brought him to a doctor's office out-of-hours due to chest pain symptoms. He had collapsed on the floor in the reception area, and was in pulseless VF arrest upon our arrival. Shortly after deploying the LUCAS 2 device, we noticed that the patient was spontaneously opening his eyes and looking around. He next started making purposeful movements with both arms, and was actively interfering with our efforts to provide full ALS resuscitation. He remained in VF, and each time the LUCAS was paused to assess for presence of a pulse, he became unresponsive again. It was an extremely eerie situation. Unfortunately despite prolonged resuscitation, we were unable to achieve ROSC and that patient died. It was a very un-nerving situation, and I was very thankful that his wife was not present to witness it.

This course is groundbreaking! Not only does it deep dive into the phenomenon of CPR Induced Consciousness (which there is simply not enough awareness of in the medical community), but Dr. Alex Jabr presents it in a way that you feel as if you are in the room with her. The lessons are engaging and interactive. After completing the course, I immediately wanted to share everything I learned with my local fire department and medical director. This is the type of continuing education course that will inspire the creation of protocols and in turn….save lives!

This course gave me so much to think about when it comes to managing CPRIC. Because this is so uncommon, it is all the more reason to be prepared for it when it does happen. I will be using what I learned in this course to open conversations on CPRIC with the physicians, nurses and staff I work with so that they are not thrown off when this happens. I experienced this one time in the field and I was not prepared for it. While the outcome for the patient ended up being good, I could have used this information to make them more comfortable during the code. I could have also been more supportive of the other members of the crew who were helping do CPR on a patient who was asking us to stop hurting them. This was an excellent course and I recommend it to everyone who works in patient care - and especially to those who are decision makers and educators in their organization.

Raising the Dead

Managing CPR Induced Consciousness

When the line between life and death blurs during a resuscitation, how do we respond? CPR Induced Consciousness (CPRIC) is a rare and perplexing medical phenomenon that presents unique clinical, ethical, and emotional challenges for all parties involved. This course explores the history, theories, and real-world case studies behind CPRIC, equipping healthcare providers with insights into its potential causes and guidance for managing this bizarre type of presentation. You’ll examine emerging best practices, current protocols (or the lack thereof), and the psychological aftermath for both patients and clinicians. Through thought-provoking studies and engaging scenarios, you’ll gain insights to help navigate the ethical dilemmas that arise when your next resuscitation takes an unexpected turn. Designed for EMS providers and accredited for 2.75 CE hours by the Commission on Accreditation for Pre-hospital Continuing Education (CAPCE), this course is also appropriate for nurses, physicians, and other healthcare providers. This class will broaden your understanding of this phenomenon and prepare you for the unimaginable—consciousness during CPR.

Independent Educator

Alexandra Jabr, Ph.D, EMT-P

Since beginning my EMS career in 2003, I have served in many roles within the system, including EMT, Paramedic, cardiac tech, CQI specialist, EMS Coordinator, and instructor. Still, the most fulfilling role to date has been my work as an educator and creator of Emergency Resilience, a continuing education platform offering trauma-informed CEs designed specifically for EMS providers. I also earned a Master’s degree in death, grief, and bereavement, and a Ph.D. in depth psychology, both of which routinely inform my work. As a medically retired paramedic, I’ve taken my time in the field, added my personal experiences as a bystander, and merged them with my education and research to create courses designed just for you. Emergency Resilience is an educational platform dedicated to helping you build resilience in unpredictable work environments by integrating often-overlooked topics into routine training.
